Job Description
Job Title:  Senior Scientist / Scientist, Hybrid Manufacturing and Manufacturing Feasibility
Requisition ID:  3307
Posting Start Date:  23/09/2026

Shape the Future of Advanced Manufacturing

We are seeking a Scientist to help develop and translate advanced manufacturing technologies into solutions that create real industrial value.

This role focuses on understanding how products and components can be manufactured more effectively using additive manufacturing, hybrid manufacturing and other advanced production technologies. You will evaluate manufacturing concepts, develop analytical and simulation methodologies, and generate the evidence needed to support engineering and manufacturing decisions.

Working alongside experts in additive manufacturing, process development, digital manufacturing, automation, materials and engineering design, you will contribute to multidisciplinary projects spanning technology development, manufacturing assessment and industrial implementation.

The role is suitable for recent PhD graduates and early-career researchers who are interested in combining technical depth with a systems-level understanding of manufacturing.

Over time, successful candidates will have opportunities to develop technical leadership capabilities and contribute to larger industry-facing programmes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and apply simulation, modelling and analytical methods to evaluate manufacturing concepts and production strategies.
  • Assess the technical feasibility of additive, conventional and hybrid manufacturing routes.
  • Analyse manufacturing process chains, workflows, lead times, resource requirements and production constraints.
  • Support evaluations of manufacturability, cost, scalability and implementation risk.
  • Design and execute studies to validate manufacturing concepts and critical assumptions.
  • Work closely with engineers and researchers to assess technology readiness and manufacturing performance.
  • Contribute to the development of methodologies, tools and best practices for manufacturing assessment and technology translation.
  • Support collaborative projects involving industrial and research partners.
  • Contribute to technical reports, proposals and knowledge-generation activities.

Requirements

  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Systems Engineering, Materials Engineering, Operations Research or a related discipline.
  • For appointment as Senior Scientist, candidates would typically possess 3-8 years of relevant experience in advanced manufacturing, manufacturing engineering, production systems, technology development, industrial research, process modelling or related fields. Outstanding candidates with fewer years of experience may be considered for appointment as Scientist.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in experimental, computational or engineering research.
  • Ability to translate complex technical problems into structured investigations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Experience

Experience in one or more of the following areas will be advantageous:

  • Additive manufacturing and LPBF
  • Hybrid manufacturing
  • Manufacturing process simulation
  • Production systems modelling
  • Engineering optimisation
  • Manufacturing economics or costing
  • Digital manufacturing
  • Operations research
  • Data analytics and decision-support tools
  • Design of experiments
  • Process development and validation

Direct experience in additive manufacturing is beneficial but not essential for candidates with strong and transferable expertise in related disciplines.

Who Will Succeed in This Role

We are looking for someone who:

  • Enjoys solving complex engineering and manufacturing problems.
  • Is curious about how products are designed, manufactured and delivered.
  • Thinks beyond individual technologies and considers complete manufacturing systems.
  • Uses evidence and analysis to support decisions.
  • Is comfortable working across multiple technical disciplines.
  • Is motivated to develop solutions that can ultimately be applied in practice.

What We Offer

  • Opportunities to work on emerging advanced manufacturing technologies.
  • Exposure to additive manufacturing, hybrid manufacturing and digital manufacturing systems.
  • Access to multidisciplinary expertise across engineering, manufacturing and technology development.
  • Opportunities to contribute to projects with industrial relevance and impact.
  • A pathway to develop from a technical contributor into a future technology and programme leader.

Why this role is different

Many manufacturing research roles focus on a single technology, process or simulation domain.

This role focuses on understanding the bigger picture: how different technologies can be combined into practical manufacturing solutions, what evidence is required to justify their adoption, and how engineering decisions influence technical performance, manufacturability, cost, lead time and implementation success.

If you are excited by applying engineering analysis and scientific thinking to solve real manufacturing challenges, we would like to hear from you.

The above eligibility criteria are not exhaustive. A*STAR may include additional selection criteria based on its prevailing recruitment policies. These policies may be amended from time to time without notice. We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
