Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative MEMS Designer/Scientist to join our advanced research and development team at Lab-in-Fab, IME. The successful candidate will lead the design, development, and optimization of MEMS devices across a broad range of transduction mechanisms, including piezoelectric, capacitive, and piezoresistive, as well as optical MEMS. Target applications span physical sensors and actuators, as well as emerging areas such as optomechanics and quantum technology.

This role offers the opportunity to work on end-to-end MEMS development, from concept and multiphysics simulation to layout, prototyping, and device characterization. The candidate will work closely with process engineers, application teams, and industry partners to turn new MEMS concepts into scalable, high-performance products.

Candidates with industry experience are preferred. The position is open to backgrounds not only in MEMS design but also in adjacent areas such as MEMS packaging, acoustics, and optomechanics. Experience in bringing MEMS or sensor-based technologies to market will be considered a strong asset.

MEMS Device Design

  • Design and develop MEMS devices such as ultrasound transducers, inertial sensors, microphones and micro speakers, resonators, micro-mirrors, and actuators, across piezoelectric, capacitive, and thermal transduction.
  • Perform device-level modeling and multiphysics simulation (structural, electrostatic, piezoelectric, thermal, fluidic, acoustic) using tools such as COMSOL (preferred), CoventorWare, or ANSYS.
  • Optimize key performance metrics, including resonance frequency, sensitivity, bandwidth, noise, linearity, stress, and power consumption, based on application requirements.
  • Create mask layouts and design rules together with process teams, considering process variation, yield, and reliability.
  • Collaborate with ASIC designers on MEMS-CMOS co-design and co-integration to ensure electrical compatibility and system-level performance.
  • Work with hardware and software teams to integrate MEMS devices into complete systems that work reliably in end-use conditions.

Education

  • Ph.D., Master's, or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Physics, or a related field.

Experience

  • Preferably at least 3 years of experience in MEMS device design and development, with a proven track record in product development and commercialization in the MEMS industry.
  • Demonstrated expertise in MEMS transducer design (e.g., sensors, actuators, resonators) using one or more transduction mechanisms.
  • Hands-on experience with MEMS fabrication processes and characterization tools.

Skills

  • Proficiency in simulation tools such as COMSOL Multiphysics, CoventorWare, ANSYS, or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of MEMS fabrication techniques, including lithography, etching, thin-film deposition, and wafer bonding.
  • Familiarity with MEMS characterization techniques (e.g., impedance analysis, laser Doppler vibrometry, wafer-level probing, environmental and reliability testing).
  • Strong programming and data analysis skills (MATLAB, Python, etc.).
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.

The above eligibility criteria are not exhaustive. A*STAR may include additional selection criteria based on its prevailing recruitment policies. These policies may be amended from time to time without notice. We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
