We are seeking a candidate for the position of Research Officer for the Division of Biotransformation and Engineering at the Singapore Institute of Food and Biotechnology Innovation, A*STAR and our Joint Fermentation Lab with our partner ScaleUpBio. Our focus areas are fermentation, biocatalysis and downstream processing to produce future food ingredients such as microbial proteins, lipids and bioactives as well as biotech-derived products i.e. for consumer care. Bioprocess Development from lab-scale to the industrial setting at FJL including Fermentation and Downstream Processing from 0.5. to up to 200 L scale are key to success.

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Conduct experiments such as enzyme-assisted pretreatment and transformation of food sidestreams for the formulation of fermentation media and microbial (fungi, yeast, and microalgae) fermentation to produce i.e. functional food/feed ingredients, bioactives and personal care products.
  • Based on customer requirements (Tech Transfer), prepare technical proposal for Scale Up from R&D scale to pilot scale.
  • Prepare Batch Manufacturing Records (BMR) required for the Scale Up process.
  • Conduct pilot fermentation and downstream processing runs together with our partners from ScaleUp Bio and for our national and international customers and partners.
  • Maintain experimental data, notes, information and references in a highly organised manner.
  •  Analyse and report experimental findings regularly to project team with key results and next steps.
  • Support the maintenance of lab and pilot equipment and adhere to good lab practices.
  • Comply with HSEP (health, safety, and environmental protection), GMP, GDP and hygiene requirements as well as Singapore rules & regulation for lab and pilot scale.

 

JOB REQUIREMENT

  • Bachelor and/or Master's degree in Biotechnology, Bioengineering, Biosciences, Chemical Engineering or equivalent.
  •  Ideally, industrial experience (i.e. Startup and/or Small and Medium Enterprise, Multinational Company)
  • Able to operate microbial fermentation, biocatalysis, and downstream processing from lab to 200 L scale.
  • Very good skills in practical laboratory and pilot scale work  report writing, experience with routine analytical systems.
  • Ability to work independently, perform diligent analysis of processes and troubleshooting and demonstrate passion for scientific and translational work.
  • Practice highest standards of research and manufacturing integrity.
