Requisition ID:  2637
Posting Start Date:  10/06/2026

Role Summary

Senior Research Engineer – Advanced Welding & Additive Manufacturing
The Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech) is seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Engineer to join the Remanufacturing Process Technology (RPT) Group’s Advanced E-Beam and Arc Joining team. The successful candidate will support and drive the development of advanced joining and additive manufacturing technologies, with a particular focus on electron beam welding (EBW), Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), and robotic arc welding for industrial manufacturing and remanufacturing applications.

Working closely with researchers, engineers, and industry partners, the candidate will contribute to the development of next-generation manufacturing solutions through process innovation, system implementation, and technology translation. The role involves hands-on experimentation, process optimization, equipment development, and technical problem-solving, with opportunities to lead work packages and contribute to the growth of the group's advanced manufacturing capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, optimize, and evaluate welding and additive manufacturing processes, with focus on WAAM, robotic arc welding, and electron beam welding.
  • Plan and conduct experimental trials, including parameter development, process characterization, and performance assessment.
  • Support process development for repair, remanufacturing, and new component production.
  • Operate, program, and troubleshoot robotic welding systems and related manufacturing equipment.
  • Develop robotic toolpaths, deposition strategies, fixtures, tooling, and experimental setups for R&D activities.
  • Conduct material evaluation, including microstructural analysis, defect assessment, and mechanical testing.
  • Support integration of manufacturing systems, sensors, data acquisition, and process monitoring solutions.
  • Analyse experimental data and prepare technical reports, presentations, publications, and project deliverables.
  • Work with industry partners, suppliers, and research collaborators to deliver project outcomes.
  • Support equipment ownership, including maintenance, safety compliance, risk assessments, and SOP development.
  • Contribute to other technical and research activities within the RPT Group as required.

Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Materials, Welding Engineering, Metallurgy, or a related discipline.
  • Experience in welding, joining, additive manufacturing, or related manufacturing processes.
  • Practical experience with robotic arc welding and/or electron beam welding systems.
  • Basic programming skills, such as Python, MATLAB, C#, LabVIEW, robot programming, or equivalent.
  • Basic understanding of metallic materials, metallurgy, and material processing.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of multidisciplinary project teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant engineering, materials, welding, automation, or manufacturing discipline.
  • Hands-on experience in WAAM process development and optimization.
  • Experience with robotic programming, automated manufacturing systems, or advanced joining technologies.
  • Knowledge of welding metallurgy, microstructural characterization, and mechanical testing.
  • Experience with CAD, fixture/tooling design, process monitoring, data acquisition, or digital manufacturing.
  • Experience in industrial R&D, research institutes, or collaborative industry projects.
