Job Summary

Position Summary

As a Research Engineer (Hydrodynamics) at the Technology Centre for Offshore and Marine, Singapore (TCOMS), you will be involved in experimental research and testing related to offshore and coastal infrastructure, maritime systems, and ocean engineering applications. In this role, you will focus on the design, execution, and analysis of physical model tests conducted in our state-of-the-art ocean basin laboratory.

Who We Are

TCOMS is a national R&D centre dedicated to the Marine & Offshore and Maritime sectors. Our next-generation Deepwater Ocean Basin research facility is equipped with advanced wave and current generation systems to simulate challenging ocean environments that marine platforms and ships operate in.

You will join us as a Research Engineer in the Physical Modelling Division. We are scientists and engineers with various backgrounds and expertise. Working together in interdisciplinary project teams, we translate scientific questions posed by real-world problems into experiments that we conduct in the ocean basin facility. Most importantly, we transform experimental data into insights for our clients.

Key Responsibilities

·        Support the planning, design, and execution of physical model tests for offshore, coastal, and maritime systems

·        Support experimental studies in hydrodynamics, seakeeping, manoeuvring, and offshore structure responses, working closely with other engineers and researchers.

·        Design and oversee the fabrication of experimental setups, model components, and fixtures required for specific tests.

·         Execute model tests in the TCOMS ocean basins and perform rigorous data acquisition, post-processing, and analysis to derive meaningful conclusions.

·         Prepare technical reports and documentation to share results with the team and clients.

·        Besides the technical work, you will also contribute to the smooth running of the lab, writing documentation, setting up experiments, and general housekeeping are all part of the team effort.

Skills, Qualifications, Experience

·         Educational Background: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related disciplines.

·         Relevant Experience: Preferably with research or industry experience in offshore engineering, hydrodynamics, or naval architecture.

·         Proficiency:

·         CAD Software: Proficient in SolidWorks, Rhino, or AutoCAD.

·         Engineering Tools: Experience with WAMIT, SESAM, or OrcaFlex is advantageous.

·         Programming: Skills in FORTRAN, Python, MATLAB, C++ or equivalent are highly valued for data analysis and automation.

What You Need to Succeed

·         Curiosity and Passion: A strong interest in experimental and physical modelling work.

·         Hands-on Approach: You are detail-oriented, proactive, and enjoy working with your hands as much as with data.

·         Collaboration: A highly resourceful team player who can work independently when needed but thrives in multidisciplinary teams.

·         Integrity: Strong professional integrity and excellent communication skills.

Why Join Us

·        Be at the forefront: Be part of innovative research and testing that supports offshore, marine, and coastal engineering.

·         Unique Exposure: Gain practical experience with large-scale and unique mechanical systems in a world-class facility.

·         Growth: Develop new skills in a supportive, safety-first environment while working on real-world problem-solving.
