Job Summary
We are seeking a microwave / radiofrequency / THz experimentalist to join A*STAR's growing fusion-energy programme within the Future Energy Acceleration & Translation (FEAT) Centre.
The Plasma Physics and Diagnostics Department is building a world-class microwave diagnostics capability, with an existing team spanning microwave hardware, synthetic diagnostics, and plasma modelling. The successful candidate will become our third microwave hardware specialist and work closely with international fusion experiments.
Fusion experience is preferred but not required. We particularly welcome strong experimentalists from adjacent microwave, radiofrequency, and THz fields who are interested in applying their expertise to fusion energy. The role offers substantial opportunities for international collaboration, extended experimental placements, and eventually leading new diagnostics, grants, and private-fusion projects.
The key scope of work includes:

Designing, commissioning, and operating microwave diagnostics for fusion plasmas.

Developing new diagnostics for future fusion energy systems.

Working closely with hardware, modelling, and plasma-physics researchers.

Publishing peer-reviewed papers.

Writing grants and developing the direction of fusion research in FEAT.

Supporting local and international collaborators in fusion research.

Supervising students and interns (optional).
Job Requirements

PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Plasma Physics or a related field.

Hands-on experience with microwave, radiofrequency, or THz hardware.

Relevant backgrounds include:
-
fusion diagnostics such as Doppler backscattering, reflectometry, ECE, polarimetry, interferometry or collective Thomson scattering;
-
microwave systems for fusion heating or related plasma applications;
-
radar and sensing;
-
RF/mm-wave instrumentation, antennas, quasi-optics, or receivers;
-
semiconductor, low-temperature-plasma, or other advanced microwave applications.

Ability and willingness to travel internationally for experimental work.

Working knowledge of scientific programming, preferably Python, C/C++, or Julia.

Strong experimental judgement, resourcefulness, and ability to work effectively in a collaborative team.

Good written and oral communication skills and a high degree of professional integrity.
Employment Terms: This is a full-time position offered on a three-year contract. In line with A*STAR's employment framework, all full-time appointments are made on a contract basis, with contract renewal subject to performance and organizational requirements.
