Description

Scientist / Senior Scientist – High-Speed TFLN Modulators & Photonic Heterogeneous Integration (PHI)

As part of IME’s Silicon Photonics Department, the successful candidate will play a key role in developing next-generation high-speed optical modulators based on Thin-Film Lithium Niobate (TFLN) and Photonic Heterogeneous Integration (PHI) technologies. The work focuses on advancing TFLN-on-Silicon Photonics (SiPh) platforms for AI, data center, and next-generation optical interconnect applications beyond 400 Gbps per lane.

The candidate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams spanning photonic device design, process integration, wafer fabrication, packaging, and testing, leveraging IME’s state-of-the-art 200 mm and 300 mm manufacturing facilities to develop scalable, manufacturing-ready photonic technologies.

 Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and optimize high-speed TFLN and TFLN-on-SiPh electro-optic modulators.
  • Develop product-ready modulators targeting 400 Gbps-per-lane and beyond for next-generation optical interconnects.
  • Collaborate with process integration teams to realize heterogeneous integration of TFLN, silicon photonics, and germanium photodetector technologies.
  • Develop advanced RF-photonic co-design methodologies, travelling-wave electrodes, and high-speed device architectures.
  • Analyze device performance, process variations, and characterization data to drive yield and performance optimization.
  • Contribute to platform development, PDK enablement, and technology transfer activities.
  • Work with industry partners and research collaborators to advance PHI technologies and applications.

Requirements

Requirements

  • PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Photonics, Materials Science, or related disciplines.
  • Strong background in photonic device design, electro-optic modulators, RF/microwave engineering, or semiconductor technologies.
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN/TFLNoI)
    • Silicon photonics and photonic integrated circuits
    • Photonic heterogeneous integration
    • High-speed electro-optic modulators and RF-photonic co-design
    • Optical and electrical device characterization
    • Photonic simulation tools such as Lumerical, HFSS, CST, or COMSOL
  • Strong communication, project management, and teamwork skills.

For Senior Scientist Position

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant industrial or research experience.
  • Proven track record in photonic device development, technical leadership, publications, patents, or technology commercialization.
