Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to join an interdisciplinary research programme focused on lignocellulosic biomass pre-treatment and conversion into functional materials. The primary focus of this role is hands-on experimental research on biomass processing and materials development using sustainable and green chemistry approaches. This position offers a unique opportunity to work at the interface of biomass chemistry, materials science, and digital chemistry, contributing to impactful sustainable materials research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute lignocellulosic biomass pre-treatment and fractionation strategies via green chemistry.
  • Convert biomass-derived fractions (cellulose, lignin, hemicellulose) into functional materials, such as polymers, composites, or bio-based specialty materials.
  • Perform material characterization using appropriate physicochemical techniques.
  • Optimize process parameters with consideration of sustainability, scalability, and material performance.
  • Support high-throughput or semi-automated experiment design.
  • Work with AI and automation teams to systematically collect, curate, and structure experimental data for database development.
  • Prepare technical reports, manuscripts, technology disclosures, and presentations for internal reviews, peer-reviewed journals, conferences and industrial partners.
  • Mentor junior researchers and students, if applicable.

Key Requirements:

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemistry, Biomass/Bio-refinery Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Strong experimental background in lignocellulosic biomass processing, biomass fractionation, or bio-based materials synthesis.
  • Solid understanding of structure–property–process relationships in materials.
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications and/or patents.
  • Familiarity with data-driven or AI-assisted research concepts in materials science is an advantage.
  • Experience working with industrial partners or translational research projects is beneficial.

The above eligibility criteria are not exhaustive. A*STAR may include additional selection criteria based on its prevailing recruitment policies. These policies may be amended from time to time without notice. We regret that only shortlisted candidates will be notified.
