Research Scientist (Quantum Device Fabrication and Measurements)

The National Quantum Federated Foundry (NQFF) is seeking a research scientist to join a multidisciplinary team developing essential quantum hardware and device components. The candidate will join our efforts on the fabrication and characterisation of quantum devices across a range of material and hardware platforms. You will be embedded in a team of research scientists and engineers, contributing hands-on to the fabrication, process development, integration, and measurement of quantum devices for applications such as quantum sensing and quantum computing.

Main responsibilities

Based on your strengths and experience, your work will be shaped around one or more of the following focus areas:

  • Device Fabrication and Process Development — Fabricate quantum and nanoscale devices on semiconductor or related substrates; develop and optimise process flows, which may include vacuum-based deposition/growth, lithography, etching, and metallisation.
  • Cleanroom Processing — Establish and refine cleanroom recipes for photolithography/electron-beam lithography, plasma etching, thin-film and metal deposition, and related steps required to build and integrate devices.
  • Device Characterisation and Measurement — Perform low-temperature electrical characterisation of quantum devices; construct, calibrate, and maintain cryogenic measurement setups; carry out data acquisition, analysis, and feedback towards improved device designs.

What we're looking for:

  • PhD in physics, applied physics, electrical/electronics engineering, materials science & engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Non-PhD holders with substantial hands on experience are welcome to apply.
  • Hands-on device fabrication and/or measurement experience relevant to one or more of the focus areas above.
  • Hands-on cryogenic measurement experience, including the handling and use of liquid helium (e.g. cryostats, dilution refrigerators, or comparable low-temperature systems).
  • Familiarity with experimental data acquisition, analysis, and presentation.
  • Familiarity with programming (especially in Python and LabVIEW) for testing automation, measurement control, and data processing.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative working style.

Experience in any of the following would set you apart:

  • Cleanroom nanofabrication (lithography, etching, thin-film/metal deposition)
  • Vacuum-based systems (e.g. UHV, thin-film deposition, crystal growth via MBE/CVD)
  • Surface science characterisation techniques such as scanning probe microscopy (STM/AFM)
  • Electrical transport/RF test equipment and measurement automation

The National Quantum Federated Foundry (NQFF) is a national quantum programme supporting Singapore's quantum R&D ecosystem and industry partners. Functioning as a research foundry, NQFF covers the full device development cycle — from design to fabrication and characterisation — with the goal of translating next-generation quantum devices towards real-world applications. NQFF has established capabilities across multiple quantum technology hardware platforms, ranging from superconducting devices to trapped-ion and integrated photonics systems.

NQFF is hosted at A*STAR IMRE, with teams operating across A*STAR IME and the National University of Singapore (NUS).
