About the Lab
Our Lab of AI & Compute at the Genome Institute of Singapore (GIS), A*STAR works in computational transcriptomics, with a focus on method development for long-read transcriptome analysis and RNA modification detection. We build the software and pipelines that turn sequencing data into biological insight.


The Role
We are seeking a Research Officer to provide computational and technical support to the lab. This is a hands-on, execution-focused position rather than an independent research role. You will run and maintain our analysis pipelines, process sequencing datasets, and help implement and test the tools developed by the team.
The role suits someone with a software engineering or computer science background who writes reliable code, works in an organised and systematic way, and enjoys supporting scientific work. Research direction and study design are set by the lab; your focus will be on delivering accurate, reproducible computational work that the rest of the team depends on.

 

Key responsibilities:
• Run, maintain, and troubleshoot bioinformatics pipelines for RNA-seq and long-read sequencing data
• Process, organise, and quality check sequencing datasets, and keep clear records of data and analyses
• Implement, test, and document software tools and analysis scripts under the guidance of senior lab members
• Support benchmarking of methods by preparing datasets, running comparisons, and summarising results
• Maintain code, documentation, and computing resources so that analyses are reproducible
• Provide day-to-day computational support to lab members and collaborators

Requirements
• Degree in computer science, software engineering, bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related quantitative discipline
• Solid programming ability, particularly in Python, and comfort writing clear, reliable code
• Comfortable working in a Linux / command line environment and with Git
• Hands-on experience with bioinformatics tools and workflows
• Experience with RNA-seq data analysis
• Genuine interest in bioinformatics and computational biology
• Disciplined and organised, with strong attention to detail and record-keeping
• Resilient and able to work steadily through technical problems
• A collaborative team player who works well with others and follows through on tasks

Desirable (nice to have)
• Familiarity with long-read sequencing platforms (e.g. Oxford Nanopore, PacBio)
• Experience with workflow managers (e.g.Nextflow, Snakemake) or containers (Docker, Singularity)
• Experience working on HPC clusters or in cloud environments
• Exposure to machine learning frameworks (e.g. PyTorch)
• Scripting in R or Bash
