Job Description

The Surface Remanufacturing Technology (SRT) Group at ARTC is seeking a hands-on and motivated Senior Laboratory Officer to support the safe, reliable operation of Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) activities for remanufacturing, repair, and surface engineering applications. This role is suited for candidates with a diploma in a relevant technical discipline and involves equipment operation, sample preparation, process support, laboratory maintenance, and accurate record-keeping.

Key Responsibilities:
•    Operate and support Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) by carrying out hands-on experiments, assisting in process trials, and building technical competency under guidance from senior engineers.
•    Record process parameters, observations, equipment status and test results accurately using approved worksheets, templates and laboratory systems.
•    Perform basic troubleshooting under established procedures.
•    Prepare and examine metallurgical samples through assigned characterisation activities.
•    Carry out routine equipment checks, preparation, cleaning and basic maintenance, and promptly report faults, abnormal conditions and safety concerns.
•    Follow work instructions and support the preparation and updating of operating procedures, experiment records, test summaries and project documentation.
•    Support daily laboratory operations, including consumables preparation, powder handling, procurement requests, inventory control, safety compliance and 5S housekeeping.

Job Requirements:
•    Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Advanced Manufacturing, Precision Engineering or a related technical discipline.
•    Willingness and ability to perform regular hands-on laboratory work.
•    Able to follow detailed work instructions, equipment operating procedures, risk assessments and laboratory safety requirements consistently.
•    Careful, reliable and safety-conscious, with practical problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently on assigned tasks and as part of a team.
•    Able to communicate clearly with team members, maintain accurate records and provide timely updates on assigned work.

Preferred
•    Practical experience with materials characterisation tasks such as sample preparation, optical microscopy, hardness testing or routine equipment operation.
•    Hands-on experience in a laboratory, workshop, production or equipment-support environment, particularly with laser operation or surface engineering, is an advantage.
•    Experience handling metal powders, shielding gases, fixtures, tooling, samples, or laboratory consumables would be advantageous
